The Purpose of the Tithe
Why do we tithe? The Bible says, the purpose of tithing is to teach us to always put God first in our lives (cf. Deuteronomy 14:23). Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have. Ultimately, the purpose of the tithe is to worship God and to accomplish God's mission in the world. Tithing shows we acknowledge that everything is the Lord's and that we have use of these things because of God's blessing (cf. Gen. 14:20; Prov. 3:9; Matt. 6:33).
The word "tithe" literally means "tenth." A tithe is traditionally understood as the first tenth of our gross earnings. To tithe is to return to God the first tenth of what He has given us. Tithing is an act of love and tests the sincerity of our love and commitment to God's mission (cf. John 14:21; 2 Corinthians 8:7-8).
In Malachi 3:10, God says this: "'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,' says the LORD Almighty, 'and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.'"
